On April 22, US VegWeek will kick off across the nation. The event comes complete with meatless giveaways, screenings of vegan movies, cooking demos, potlucks and specials at participating restaurants.
It’s part of Compassion Over Killing’s effort to encourage people to “choose meat-free foods as a way to build a kinder, cleaner, and healthier world." The not-for-profit is based in Washington, D.C. and has been working toward this goal since 1995.
VegWeek began in 2009 in Takoma Park, Maryland, when Senator Jamie Raskin decided to make the nonprofit’s message a citywide celebration. Raskin himself even gave up meat for the week, and remains a vegetarian to this day.
You can make the 7-Day VegPledge on the event website. Participants will receive a starter packet of information that includes coupons for meatless products and meatless recipes. If you’re worried that a vegan diet can’t support your athletic pursuits, check out this article about vegan ultrarunner Brendan Brazier and we promise you’ll feel better.
