Americans have weathered the coronavirus pandemic and all its unfortunate consequences for the better part of three months now. And since life in the U.S. came to a near halt in March, people have filed for unemployment at record-breaking rates. Here are the 50 states plus Washington, D.C. ranked from least to most affected by coronavirus unemployment based on percent increase in jobless claims during March through May in 2019 and 2020.

To gauge the coronavirus outbreak’s impact on U.S. unemployment, WalletHub.com and a team of experts compared the number of unemployment insurance initial claims in each state between the weeks of March 16 through May 11 in 2020 to the weeks of March 18 through May 13 in 2019. The team then ranked the 50 states and Washington, D.C. by the percent increase. Even in the least affected state, unemployment has increased by over 1,140%. In the most affected state, the percent increase in claims from 2019 to 2020 is four times as high.
