For me, bike commuting is good for my physical and mental health. It's a perfect, 30-minute transition—heart and legs pumping, mind laser-focused on nothing but my immediate surroundings—from the desk-bound day job to home life. It's a twice-a-day adventure that bookends the workday as I cruise past street musicians and food carts, beneath architectural masterpieces and over historic bridges spanning New York's East River (which, I'll add, looks much prettier than you'd imagine at sunset).
But between distracted motorists, inclement weather and mechanical problems, there's an awful lot that can go wrong on the ride to and from the office. Gearing up with the right products can help iron out potential kinks in your commute, and allow you to better enjoy the ride.
As cyclists like me often smugly point out, the bicycle is the most efficient form of human-powered transportation ever devised. But show up covered in grease, soaked in rain or sweat—or worse, don’t show up at all because you’ve been taken out by a car—the point is, unfortunately, moot.
These 28 commuter products cover the gamut of situations one may encounter—from a flat tire to wayward motorists. They range from bicycle-friendly bags to handlebar-mounted smartphone holsters, and cover your bike commute from point A to point B.
We’ve got you covered from head to toe, too—with stylish Merino wool socks from Darn Tough, super-pants from Outlier, a fashionable, fitted jacket from Pearl Izumi and lightweight cranium protection from Giro.
Check it out, and happy riding.
