But if you’re looking for a true scare, there is one movie that you have to put on your list: “It.” According to box office data, it’s the highest-grossing horror film domestically over the past four decades.

To find the top-grossing horror movie in the U.S., we looked through box office earnings for feature films in the horror genre in IMDb since 1970. Out of all the terrifying movies to choose from, “It” led the pack in box offices across the country.

The film, based on a novel by Stephen King, is about a monster that disguises itself as a clown and terrorizes the residents of a small town in Maine. The film was released in 2017 and grossed $328.83 million. Its sequel, released in 2019, grossed $211.59 million.
