For many people, this time of the year causes anxiety and stress. It’s important to learn how to manage your stress to avoid gaining weight this holiday season. Stress increases cortisol – a hormone which sends signals to your body and creates belly fat. It also has been shown to cause overeating; this may be because some foods, such as sugar or other “comfort foods,” actually have the ability to make us feel better.
The first step towards staying fit over the holidays is to make a list of your short and long term goals. Begin thinking about where you want to be by January, then 6 months and 1 year from now. Michelle Roots, resident fitness expert and trainer for Trainerize, says that you should “set realistic goals around performance or inches and try not to worry too much about the scale.”
It’s also important to educate yourself about nutrition; learn about how to eat healthier and reach your fitness goals, Roots says. Instead of eating junk and processed items, consider foods with “superpowers,” that have the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs.
