Wrinkles are a natural part of healthy aging, but that doesn’t keep people from trying to avoid getting them. Beauty companies make a pretty penny off of anti-aging creams and treatments, but according to dermatologists and researchers, there’s just one product you really need to keep the wrinkles at bay: sunscreen.

Aging Myths Everyone Needs to Stop Believing

Your eyes, hair and skin can reveal a lot about your health, and your skin in particular is an open book about how much sun, hydration and nutrition you’re receiving. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the sun’s ultraviolet rays are harmful to your skin, causing skin cancer in people of all ages, genders and races. Using sunscreen, however, can prevent skin cancer as well as other skin conditions such as sunburns and sun poisoning.

What many people don’t realize, however, is that sunscreen can also prevent visible signs of aging in the form of wrinkles. According to multiple studies, daily use of sunscreen can slow down skin aging and prevent wrinkles as well as skin sagging.

Per the recommendations from the American Academy of Dermatology, sunscreen should be applied every day if you plan to be outside, even when it’s cloudy. Believe it or not, sunscreen is an especially important part of your winter skincare routine, as snow reflects the sun’s rays back on you, similar to how sand and water do at the beach.

The sunscreen that you apply should be water-resistant, protect against both UVA and UVB rays, and have an SPF of 30 or higher. Applying sunscreen is just one of the important ways you should take better care of yourself as you age.
