There are quite a few reasons why you may be experiencing increased appetite. If you have been undergoing a great amount of stress, this may be the reason why you always feel like you’re hungry. Stress eating has been shown to cause overeating; this may be because some foods such as sugar or other “comfort foods,” actually have the ability to make us feel better.
Similar to stress eating, “if you’re having a particularly rough day, anger and frustration often cause people to seek comfort through unhealthy (but tasty) foods that act like rewards and trigger release of dopamine, which helps to curb the bad vibes,” Schultz explains. “Avoid this by being mindful about eating and ask yourself why you’re about to eat that entire pizza by yourself.”
You eat too fast
It takes about 20 minutes from the time you start eating for your brain to send out signals of fullness, according to WebMD. Eating too fast doesn’t give your brain enough time to process that you are full. Take it easy and slow down; eating slowly gives your brain enough time to trigger the signal from your brain that you are full.
You’re not getting enough sleep
“This leads to higher baseline levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can push you towards overeating and comfort foods that you might not otherwise eat,” says Schultz. You can avoid this by meditating. “Not only has it been studied in stress relief, it has also been studied in helping people become more mindful of food choices,” he adds.
You don’t eat breakfast
Skipping breakfast causes your blood sugar to drop, making you hungrier for your next meal. By the time lunch comes around, you end up eating way more than you normally would.
You’re mistaking thirst for hunger
“The feeling of hunger can be masked by dehydration,” Shultz explains.
