Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by obsessions, thoughts and repetitive behaviors. It involves both obsessions and compulsions that get in the way of a person’s daily life.

Compulsions are a way of relieving stress and anxiety. There are many different types of obsessions and compulsions when it comes to OCD. For instance, the fear of contamination, compulsive counting, over checking and perfectionism, just to name a few.

Frequent hand washing


One of the most common signs of OCD is frequent hand washing. People who suffer from this disorder often fear contamination and being dirty. They have compulsions which trigger hand-washing. For instance, after shaking a person’s hand or touching a dirty surface, they may feel the need to excessively wash their hands.

You obsess about your body


Body-focused obsessions are among the less talked about types of obsessions, according to Psych Central. Hyperawareness of blinking, swallowing and breathing, and over attention to bladder are a few examples.

Over cleaning


You scrub, clean, polish, vacuum, dust, and shine, but it’s still not enough. Over-cleaning is a sign of OCD. Counting compulsions


Compulsive counting is a common symptom of OCD. Individuals who count may do so because they feel certain numbers have a special significance. They may also count without thinking. For instance, they may count their steps as they walk or count cars as they drive past them.



One of the most common symptoms of OCD is perfectionism. Individuals may perform rituals or actions to make sure things are always perfect and organized – they fear failure. For them, this may be the only way they feel like they can relieve their anxiety. People who tend to dwell on relationships and constantly find themselves overthinking and dissecting may be suffering from OCD. They may obsess over what they should have said but didn’t say, or create fearful scenarios in their head about what could go wrong.

Intense stress


Do you feel intense stress when objects are not in a certain order? Maybe the fear of contamination and being forced into certain situations stresses you out. For instance, objects that are not facing a certain way may cause you anxiety, or the thought of your hands being dirty stresses you out if you touch an unclean surface.

Constantly asking for reassurance


The constant need for reassurance is one of the most common signs of OCD. A person may find that asking the opinions of their friends and family soothes their anxiety. One may question if it’s okay that he or she performs a certain task. Patients may obsess over their actions, constantly questioning if something bad will happen, or if someone will get hurt in a certain situation.

Trouble concentrating


Have you noticed a change in your level of concentration? You may feel your mind start to wander, encounter racing thoughts, and have trouble focusing. Falling behind in work or school is common because people who suffer from this disorder may get so wrapped up in their thoughts that they find it difficult to concentrate on anything else.
