5 items the creator of The MEG needs for beach trips
Even if you've had your head buried in the sand these past several months, you've seen it. The massive dorsal fin slicing through a crowd of panicking bathers. An 11-foot mouth filled with 276 hand-sized teeth, savagely chomping at anything and everything that gets in its way. Jason Statham diving headlong into the ocean to go hand-to-fin with a 75-foot long prehistoric shark, Carcharodon megalodon.
Steve Alten's The MEG is swimming into theaters around the world on Aug. 10 as one of 2018's most hyped movies. There are several trailers, billboards, apps, memes, and even a traveling submersive VR experience, all designed to get audiences pumped for this colossal summer blockbuster. In keeping with the oceanic theme, BestReviews wondered what five items the international best-selling author will be bringing with him to the beach this summer.
#5: Sun tan oil (SPF #8)
"I need the lube so I don't burn."
OUR PICK: Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen comes in a 3-fluid ounce bottle and offers an impressive SPF 100+ protection, which blocks over 99 percent of the sun's harmful rays. The oil-free formula allows it to go on smooth, feel clean, and keep you dry.
#4: Beach chair & towel
"Using the chair far more as I get older."
OUR PICK: With Coleman's Oversized Quad Chair, you can enjoy the spacious embrace of a 24-inch cushioned seat that comes complete with a supported back, so you can lounge away with confidence. The best feature, however, is the built-in 4-can cooler pouch that allows you to keep your beverages chilled and within arms reach at all times.
#3. Bottled water
"I can pee in the ocean, but I can't drink from it."
OUR PICK: When you need to stay hydrated, Simple Modern's Wave Water Bottle is the way to go. The double-walled, vacuum insulated technology not only maintains your beverage's temperature (hot or cold) for a remarkably long time.
"Do you expect me to squint all day?"
OUR PICK: Maui Jim's Ho'okipa MJ Sport Sunglasses let you protect your eyes with elegance and style. These polarized, prescription-ready, scratch-resistant lenses eliminate all glare, and they are rugged enough to wear during even the most intense sporting activities.
#1: A copy of The MEG

MORE ABOUT STEVE AND THE MEG:
Steve told BestReviews that he's always loved shark stories. "After reading Benchley's novel, I went straight to the library and checked out every true-life great white shark attack story. In the process, I came across little blurbs about megalodon, the prehistoric cousin of the great white, usually accompanied by a black and white photo of six scientists seated in a megalodon jaw. But there was nothing else out there."
After reading an article about the Mariana Trench and deep water hydrothermal vents in TIME magazine, Steve began pondering, "What if that big shark was still alive down there?"
Six months later, Steve had written MEG, an incredible story about a man, Jonas Taylor, and a glowing white megalodon from the Mariana Trench. Based on scientific facts, but still very much a fictional story, his first novel quickly became a best-seller.
