Displaced workers continue to file initial unemployment claims as the COVID-19 outbreak and mandatory stay-at-home orders shutter most non-essential businesses. In the week ending April 4, the number of advance initial claims not adjusted for seasonal change reached 6.2 million in the U.S. The week before ending March 28, the number of advance initial claims reported by the 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands topped 5.8 million.
For context, in 2019 total claims for the week ending with March 30 totaled 183,801 for the whole country. For the week ending with April 6 it was 196,170. So these same weeks in 2020 have seen a 96.84% increase in unemployment claims.
