Things You’re Doing on a Plane That Are Kinda Annoying Everyone

Between airport delays, security checkpoints, and checked and carry-on bags, a day at the airport can be hectic. It is a relief once you have boarded your flight, but then, out of nowhere, you realize your neighbor has some quite obnoxious tendencies.

Unfortunately, annoying passengers will always exist. But do they even know that they’re actually bothering everyone?

Continue reading to find out the things you’re doing on a plane that are kind of annoying everyone. Because, let’s be honest: You don’t want to be the person who is kicked off a plane because of bad body odor.

Talking Too Much

You get on the plane, hook your travel pillow around your neck, and as you're about to doze off, your neighbor starts talking. There is nothing worse than sitting next to a stranger who just won’t zip it. If you’re that chatty neighbor, remember that some people really want to enjoy their flight in peace and quiet.

Hogging the Armrest

Getting stuck sitting in the middle seat is annoying, but you must remember that you are not entitled to both armrests. Make sure that you share the armrests and leave some space for the person sitting next to you.

Being Rude to Flight Attendants

Flight attendants are there to help you throughout your flight and make your experience as convenient as possible. Don’t be rude to them, and please don’t make a scene; you are just disturbing and annoying other passengers, not to mention embarrassing yourself.

Kicking the Seat in Front of You

To the person who adjusts themselves several times throughout their flight, please stop kicking and bumping into the seat in front of you. According to Expedia, “When asked to choose from a list of annoying behaviors, 61% of Americans cited seat-kicking as a top in-flight concern.” We are all crammed into the same small place suffering from little leg room. Have some respect for the passenger in front of you and stop waking them up by kicking their seat.

Drinking Too Much

OK, we understand some people get nervous on flights. Drinking may even help you fall asleep faster. However, when one drink turns into five, it has a tendency to transform that passenger into a loud, annoying flyer (think Bridesmaids-level irritating). You’re on a plane, not at a New Year’s Eve party. There is absolutely nowhere else to go. Wait until you arrive at your destination, and then celebrate with a few drinks.

Going to the Bathroom Several Times

There is nothing more annoying than having to get up multiples times throughout a flight to let your neighbor into the aisle. Make sure to pick an aisle seat if you know you’re prone to making several trips to the bathroom.

Bringing Too Many Carry-On Bags

First of all, how did that person make it through airport security without being told to check some bags? Bringing too many bags on the plane is rude; the overhead compartments are there for everyone, and you shouldn’t take up too much space.

Reclining Your Seat

You are sharing this plane with other people. If you can, keep your seat upright. If you absolutely need to recline your seat, politely ask the person behind you if they have enough room. Don’t just take up all the space.

Leaning on Your Neighbor

Your body is not a human headrest. Falling asleep on your neighbor is rude and makes them uncomfortable. If you have a tendency to lean over as you fall asleep, purchase a travel pillow.

Reading Over Someone’s Shoulder

Bring your own book or magazine on the plane, and stop creeping over your neighbor’s shoulder to see what they’re reading. This is not only rude, but it makes your neighbor uncomfortable, even if they don’t say so.

Hogging the Restroom

Be courteous of others. There are only a few bathrooms on your plane and plenty of people are going to have to use them throughout the flight. Don’t be the bathroom hog that causes a line of people to populate in the aisle.

Leaving Your Trash in the Aisle

This is just plain rude. The airplane is not your personal garbage can. Plus, littering is disgusting and disrespectful to the other people on your flight. Flight attendants walk through the plane countless times with trash bags for a reason.
