Carrying around excess weight can be uncomfortable and damaging to your health. A healthy diet, combined with exercise, is key to not only just blasting unwanted belly fat, but maintaining proper bodily function.

Cut back on sugary drinks

“Regular intake of sugar-sweetened drinks like soda is connected with an increase in belly fat, found in a study by Massachusetts researchers,” Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in Jersey City, NJ, says. “Opt instead for sparkling water with a squeeze of orange juice, or infuse water overnight with strawberries.”

Exercise

“Fitting in movement helps burn calories and helps you manage your weight,” Gorin says. “If you’re losing weight through exercise, you’ll likely shed some belly fat, too!”

Eat your pulses

Pulses include beans, lentils, chickpeas, and dried peas—and eating these can help your weight loss. When you lose weight overall, some of that will come from your belly,” Gorin says. “In one study, people eating ¾ cup of pulses daily lost about three quarters of a pound over six weeks, versus people not eating pulses daily. The subjects who lost weight were following either a weight-maintenance or weight-loss diet.”

Sweeten with spice

Cut sugar and calories by sweetening your food with cinnamon or vanilla extract,” Gorin says. “Add a dash of cinnamon to your coffee, or add cinnamon or vanilla extract to a brownie or muffin recipe and decrease the sugar (and calorie!) content by up to 25 percent.”

Get enough vitamin D and calcium

“Some research connects vitamin D and calcium intake with decreased belly fat,” Gorin says. “One study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people who took in 100 IU of vitamin D and 350 mg of calcium via fortified orange juice daily had a greater decrease in belly fat, versus people not drinking the fortified orange juice.”

Start a meal with water

“Drinking water before a meal can help with weight loss,” Gorin says. “When obese adults drank about two cups of water before eating their daily meals, they lost significantly more weight versus people who simply imagined feeling full before beginning their meal.”

Put your food on a smaller plate

“Consistently eating off of a small plate (such as a salad plate), versus a larger plate and drinking calorie-containing beverages from tall, narrow glasses could lead to an over 200-calorie daily reduction,” Gorin says.

Have a smaller dinner

“Eating a larger percentage of your daily calories earlier in the day could help with weight loss, shows research,” Gorin says. “This makes sense because you don’t necessarily need a lot of energy in the evening after dinner, unless you’re planning a nighttime workout.”

Drink green tea

Green tea has very powerful effects on the body. It contains nutrients and antioxidants that help your body function. One of the main powers of green tea is that it aids in fat loss. It’s been proven that green tea boosts your metabolic rate, which in turn increases the amount of fat you are burning. Other health benefits of green tea include lowering your risk of type 2 diabetes, improving brain function, reducing the risk of some cancers, and preventing the signs of aging.

Get enough sleep

A good night’s sleep helps us feel better, both mentally and physically. Depriving ourselves from sleep can lead to serious health problems, one of them being weight gain. Lack of sleep is associated with increased cortisol levels, cravings for sugary snacks, slow metabolism, and high stress levels.
