Naturally, each of these hotels also places you within easy reach of some of the best sites in Italy to visit. Whether you're into good food, spa time, or just want to find the best hotel rooftop in the city, this list of great places to stay in Rome can accommodate every budget and cover all bases.

InterContinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace

When InterContinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace opened earlier this year, it brought new life to the city's legendary Via Veneto, which found fame in the legendary 1960 movie "La Dolce Vita" and is now experiencing a resurgence thanks to media coverage. Reflecting its name, as "ambasciatori" translates to ambassadors, the hotel takes over a 1900-built site that was first constructed as a residence for ambassadors visiting the nearby American Embassy before the building became the American Embassy Library in 1946.

Now newly transformed by IHG Hotels & Resorts, the landmark property features 160 sumptuous guest rooms, which pair contemporary style with neo-classical detail and inviting public areas including a buzzy restaurant, two bars, and a lobby set apart by its grand marble staircase and gold-coffered ceiling.

The drinking and dining experience is a highlight of the hotel. LDV Hospitality has brought its celebrated Scarpetta restaurant, of New York fame, to the site. This Italian-American dining destination is then joined by Charlie's rooftop bar, which is inspired by the spirit of a "good time Charlie," and back on the ground floor, Anita's Lounge & Bar, named for Swedish actress Anita Ekberg of the Federico Fellini masterpiece this hotel pays homage to.

Six Senses Rome

Six Senses made its Italy debut, and launched its first-ever urban retreat, with the early 2023 opening of this luxury hotel in Rome. Six Senses Rome encapsulates the brand's well-known focus on sustainability and wellness with a structure that sees the revival of a historic site, an environmentally conscious ethos spanning everything from the interior design to the sourcing of ingredients for the restaurant, and the representation of traditional Roman baths in the spa.

This property now occupies the 15th-century Palazzo Salviato Cesi Mellini. Original architectural details of this palazzo, such as its grand staircase, pillars, and arches, are now stylishly paired with a curation of contemporary furnishings, abundant greenery, and Roman-inspired modern art.

A focus of the property, the open-plan BIVIUM Restaurant-Café-Bar, takes over the sprawling light-filled space leading off the site's historic gallery connecting the two streets on opposite sides of the building. Here, pods of seating and dining areas, separated by open kitchens, are joined by an indoor-outdoor bar. Throughout the rest of the hotel, nature-inspired rooms and suites feature alongside other guest spaces, including the high-tech meets Roman classicism spa, NOTOS Rooftop, and the brand's signature Earth Lab that offers workshops in sustainability.

Mama Shelter Rome

Mid-2021 saw the French hospitality brand Mama Shelter's entry to Rome with the opening of this fun, design-led property. Just like the other hotels making up the brand's growing portfolio of mid-range hotels, Mama Shelter Rome is defined by its colorful design and playful spirit. This property is located in Rome's characterful Prati district, on the right bank of the Tiber, making Vatican City easily accessible from the hotel on foot.

At the hotel, bold modern design — featuring mosaic flooring, contemporary furnishing, and artwork by the artist Beniloys – runs through each of the vibrant common areas, which include co-working space, Giardino d'Inverno & Bar, Mama Pizzeria, and the Rooftop. European and local specialties at Giardino d'Inverno include homemade gelato, and this food is offered alongside an extensive range of wines and cocktails.

For guests of the hotel, a stay in one of the 217 comfortable rooms, which naturally come with the Mama Shelter aesthetic, is complemented with access to the Mama baths that encompass a pool, sauna, and steam room, as well as the onsite fitness center.

Pavilions Rome, The First Musica

Arriving in Rome just last year, the high-end boutique Pavilions Rome, The First Musica joins Pavilions' two other sites, The First Arte and The First Dolce, in the city. The First Musica is housed in a mid-century building, which has been renovated by Studio Marincola. Just like its sister hotels, the property blends a sense of la dolce vita with contemporary Roman culture as it brings art, gastronomy, and wellness into the hotel experience.

In terms of its location, the hotel places guests close to the Spanish Steps in a position overlooking the Tiber. Inside the property, 24 guest rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows and luxurious decor, and Bang & Olufsen Beosound Balance wireless speakers bring music to each room. Located on the fifth floor, the Italian restaurant, Oliva, offers city views, while the Alto rooftop bar, encompassing the sixth and seventh floor, also offers sweeping panoramas.

Below street level, guests will find a subterranean spa where an indoor pool features alongside a wellness space incorporating two treatment rooms. To connect guests to the city, the property offers tailored itineraries, which are designed to immerse you in the city's history and introduce you to its hidden secrets.

J.K. Place Roma

Each stylish hotel in the boutique collection of luxurious J.K. Place properties — currently present in Capri, Paris, and Milan, as well as Rome — is designed to provide a home away from home where great design meets an appreciation for art, fashion, and a luxury lifestyle. J.K. Place Roma aptly occupies the city's former school of architecture, and since its opening, it has become a go-to for design lovers due to its appealing location and impeccably designed interiors.

The modern townhouse hotel hosts guests in just 27 rooms and suites, a chic lounge, library, and JKCafe Bar, which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This cozy dining space serves both Italian specialties and international classics using market-fresh produce, along with signature cocktails and snacks throughout the day.

The hotel places you just a short walk from major sites such as the Spanish Steps. To explore the surrounding area, you can borrow one of the J.K. exclusive e-bikes or join an ArcheoRunning tour, which is offered exclusively to guests and combines exercise with sightseeing.

Generator Rome

Just like its sister properties in the Generator group of urban hostels, Generator Rome combines budget-friendly accommodation with a laid-back atmosphere and appealing design-led social spaces. It's also conveniently located in the Esquilino neighborhood, which is close to Roma Termini station and a short walk from sites like the Colosseum. Of the smartly styled spaces to stay, opt for a private room accommodating from one to six people or book a bed in one of the shared dorm rooms. Private rooms come with useful features and amenities such as a desk and complimentary toiletries.

While you're here, be sure to spend some time in the welcoming bar and lounge for which the interiors were inspired by Old Havana. Here, you can choose dishes from the deli-style menu featuring items from Mercato dell'Esquilino, which is just across the street from the hostel, along with local beers and cocktails. Barista-style coffee and breakfast bites are also served in the on-site cafe. The rooftop provides another social setting at the property in the warmer months.

Hotel Eden

With its prime location, Michelin-star dining, and panoramic rooftop, Hotel Eden, a part of the Dorchester Collection, is widely considered one of Rome's top places to stay. The grand hotel, which first opened in 1889, benefits from an elevated position above the city's Ludovisi quarter, close to Rome's most iconic sites. Gardens surround this yellow and white building, and its rooftop provides impressive views over the city. Rome is the inspiration for much of the hotel interiors' design details, like frescoes and other artwork, which pair with the marble, arches, columns, and gold accents, but in a contemporary context.

It's worth coming to this hotel for the rooftop restaurant, La Terrazza, alone. Here, diners can enjoy a Michelin-starred, fine dining experience in which Mediterranean dishes champion local produce and are served with a mesmerizing view. For Italian cuisine, head to the hotel's Il Giardino Ristorante — also on the rooftop — and make time for the rooftop Il Giardino Bar or La Libraria. The hotel's elegant city-view guest rooms, of which there are just under 100, are also joined by the hotel's serene wellness sanctuary, Eden Spa.

Otivm Hotel

The popular Otivm Hotel combines an appealing location, in the heart of Rome and within walking distance of many of the city's historic monuments, with polished interiors and an enviable rooftop providing 360-degree views over the ancient city. The high-end but affordable boutique hotel provides comfortable accommodation in double and twin rooms. The interior design draws on a Belle Epoque style with subtle tones paired with pops of vibrant color. Providing a little outdoor space to guests, the hotel's suites also come with their own balcony or terrace.

A breakfast buffet is served in the hotel's interior dining room, which is neighbored by the hotel's sleek bar, but the real highlight of this property is its spectacular rooftop space, Otivm Roof Bar. Find a seat in this panoramic space to sip a cocktail while identifying famous surrounding monuments. Adding to its convenience, the hotel also offers 24-hour reception and airport shuttles.

The Hoxton Rome

The 2021-opened Hoxton Rome brings the popular mid-range hospitality concept of the London-born Hoxton brand to a structure dating back to the 1970s in the neighborhood of Parioli. This area is known for its many gelaterias and local trattorias, cultural institutions like the Museum of Contemporary Art, and much-loved parks such as Villa Borghese.

In interiors combining elements of the original structure with architecture that's typical of the Eternal City, this 192-room hotel stands out first for its 1970s modernist, light-filled lobby, which leads to a sweeping curved coffee bar and cafe, and a shaded outdoor terrace. Italian vintage furnishings and local artwork add to the character of each space.

The hotel's relaxed all-day cafe, Cugino, switches into a bar with Aperitivo hour at 6 p.m., and Elio restaurant celebrates Italian feasting by incorporating the country's best ingredients. Taking up the rest of the hotel, the bedrooms, which range from Shoebox to Biggy, come with lots of creative details as they take on a mid-century Italian design aesthetic, with inspiration also taken from classic Italian cinema.

The RomeHello

Highly rated among budget-conscious travelers coming to Rome, The RomeHello hostel takes pride in providing a hospitable place that's full of energy and positive vibes. Both private rooms and dorms, simply but smartly decorated with all the necessary amenities, provide a place to sleep in this welcoming site, which also encompasses the social Barrel Bar & Grill by Tyler. Designed as a multicultural venue, the bar serves cocktails and dishes from the grill, along with other options like nachos and charcuterie plates. The space is decorated with wall art and hosts an eclectic range of live music.

A self-proclaimed art hostel, the RomeHello has brought a Street Art Gallery concept to the walls of its common areas. For this concept, artists from the international street art scene have created a series of murals inspired by travel and the city of Rome. Guests are encouraged to engage with the art featured throughout the property. From this property's convenient location near Termini station, the hostel facilitates several activities, such as pasta cooking classes and walking tours to check out some of the more underrated attractions in Rome.

St. Regis Rome

One of Rome's great grand dame hotels, St. Regis Rome has long been a landmark of the Eternal City. Legendary hotelier César Ritz first opened the doors to this hotel in 1894. Since then, the hotel has hosted an illustrious list of guests from heads of state to Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor. In its latest era, the lavish property is characterized by the glamorous yet contemporary interiors of prominent designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. Retaining St. Regis Rome's original character, but now with more modern appeal, the property welcomes guests into a showstopper lobby, which encompasses a bar, restaurant, and library, forming the heart of the hotel.

Find a seat at the contemporary Belle-Epoque-inspired LUMEN Cocktails and Cuisine, and seek out the oasis that is Lumen Garden. Afternoon tea and champagne sabering are among the St. Regis traditions still being celebrated. Make the most of the famous St. Regis butler service while staying in one of the luxurious rooms and suites, featuring opulent details like Venetian chandeliers, and don't hesitate to bring your four-legged companion along, too — the hotel makes a point of being pet-friendly.

Hotel Indigo Rome - St George

Playful and contemporary, the mid-range Hotel Indigo Rome – St George drew inspiration from the Fiat 500 for its guest rooms, with the city's landmarks also becoming a part of the design through the integration of murals. Bright color accents balance the use of neutral tones in space also bringing in classic Italian elements like travertine marble. Here, much of the focus falls on I Sofà Bar, which also serves snacks, along with I Sofà di Via Giulia restaurant, which is open for breakfast, aperitif, and dinner. The restaurant and bar moves to the hotel's scenic rooftop during the summer months.

Also at the hotel, and complimentary to hotel guests, is the onsite wellness center, St. George Spa, which represents Roman baths with its sauna, Turkish bath, and hot tub, and features a 24-hour fitness center. The property is well located on the major thoroughfare, Via Giulia, in the city's historic center. From here, many of the city's greatest sights (including some of the best museums to visit in Italy) are within easy reach. The hotel strives to introduce you to the city's highlights through the knowledge of its staff and neighborhood guides.

The Rome EDITION

This city's offshoot of the sophisticated EDITION Hotels by Ian Schrager, The Rome EDITION, which opened in July of 2023, fuses the striking architecture of the building it's housed within with opulent modern design. Just moments from Via Veneto, the luxury property also places you within a short walk from many iconic sites, such as the Borghese Gardens and Trevi Fountain.

At the design-led hotel, 91 wood-paneled and parquet-floored rooms and suites, with marble and white design details, provide a serene retreat from the streets they overlook. Communal spaces of the hotel include the signature restaurant, Anima, which spills out to the hotel's garden, the speakeasy-inspired Punch Room, the 12-seat Jade Bar, and The Roof. At Anima, dine on modern Italian-Mediterranean cuisine, which focuses on seasonality and freshness, and when it's open in the summer months, try the in-season seafood dishes on the rooftop venue. The luxurious new hotel is planning to add a rooftop pool, spa, and gym soon.
