Learn how to stay safe with this series from Canoe & Kayak, Jim Coffey and Mike McKay

Whitewater kayaking is a fun and growing sport, but paddling through rapids or down waterfalls can be very dangerous.

The following video series was produced by Jim Coffey—founder of R3: Rescue for River Runners—in conjunction with Canoe and Kayak Magazine and Mike McKay.

The videos were shot in Costa Rica, Mexico and Canada and cover several aspects of white water rescue including group dynamics and self-rescue.

Of course, the series can’t take the place of a whitewater safety course. Make sure to seek additional training if you’re serious about the sport.
