It’s easy to be excited about a place you have never visited before. But it’s also very easy to be misled about how cool or worthy of your time and money it is. A quick Google search usually suggests the most popular sites. Unfortunately, they can actually be the ones you want to avoid.
This is not to say that you should avoid popular destinations, but keep in mind that you are more likely to encounter the unpleasantness that invariably comes with huge crowds – overpriced food and souvenirs and tours that tell you nothing more than what you can find online.
Do you really want to waste your time and spend hours traveling and waiting for a chance to see a vast area of land with nothing else on or surrounding it? The answer may be “yes” only if there was anything else to do there.
Many visitors know what to expect but still flock to places like the Sherlock Holmes Museum or Disneyland. Many even venture out to the middle of a desert just to risk a back injury by touching four tiny pieces of land belong to four different states.
The reality is that many locations simply don’t live up to the hype.
