Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, but don’t fret if you haven’t planned a surprise trip to show how much your partner means to you. You have plenty of last-minute options.

“While the best time to book Valentine’s Day travel is in December through mid-January, you can always plan a last-minute outing or weekend trip that caters to what your loved one enjoys,” Ivy Chou, travel expert at DealsPlus, says.

Take advantage of great places that are closer by, such as wineries, outdoorsy attractions, and spas. An added bonus is that you’ll spend time doing fun things together as opposed to being on the road. “You'll also enjoy more quality time together rather than waiting in long lines at the airport,” she adds.

There are plenty of places to go depending on where you reside and what you like to do. Yelp, Travelzoo, and hotel/travel sites will be extremely helpful, Chou says.  Think about how far you're willing to travel, then do a search on restaurants, hotels, activities, and attractions that are within your range of distance or travel time. “From there, narrow it down by what type of travel you like, whether it be spas and relaxation, wine tasting, fine dining, or outdoor exploration,” she adds.

You are in luck because this year Valentine’s Day is during the week. “You have your choice of celebrating on the day of, the weekend before, or the weekend after and they'll all feel appropriate,” Chou says. This also spreads out the crowds so it'll be easier to get reservations throughout the week.

AirfareWatchdog is an excellent tool to find cheap tickets since you can input your city of origin, and they’ll display the best fares of the day listed by price, Chou says. She also recommends Google Flights and CheapFlights.

Napa, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Colorado Springs, are just a few wonderful places to go that have hotels in all price ranges and plenty of activities that won’t break the bank. Nikki Sunshine, content manager at DealsPlus, found some good deals over the special weekend.

If you're flexible with your dates, you could pay up to 40 percent less by traveling later this month. Take your loved one out to dinner and surprise them with a future trip. Bonus: You get to celebrate the special day twice while saving a bit of money.
