The 50 Least Populous Places In The U.S.

Of approximately 19,500 incorporated places, about 76 percent had fewer than 5,000 people and nearly 50 percent had fewer than 1,000 people. Some have fewer than five. Also, of the 50 towns with the smallest population, just little less than half of them are either in North or South Dakota.

The following list is based on the 2017 populated estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Monowi village, Nebraska

This is the only incorporated municipality in the country with a single resident.

Gross village, Nebraska

2017 Population Estimate: 2

While Nebraska has a penchant for common nouns as town names, such as Magnet and Worms, perhaps the most unappealing city name is Gross. Ahead of the opening of a new railroad, the area was settled in 1893 by Ben Gross and his wife. The community began to thrive until the railroad ultimately bypassed the new city.

Lotsee town, Oklahoma

Technically, Carlton Landing is the smallest town in the state because it has zero residents. But the, is it really populous at all? In 2000 eleven people lived in Lotsee, which is in Tulsa County. The most the town has ever had was 16 full-time residents.

Cave town, Missouri

The town is on the St. Louis Metro Area. It was incorporated in the 1980s, and was included in the census for the very first time in 1990 when it had 10 residents.

Tavistock borough, New Jersey

It's a borough in Camden County. The whole purpose of it being formed was so members of Tavistock Country Club were allowed to play golf on Sundays by members of the Victor Talking Machine Company.

Verdon town, South Dakota

Verdon, which was named after the French city of Verdun, has had a declining population since 1910, when 136 people lived there. The post office closed in 1982.

Thurmond town, West Virginia

The town is located about seven miles southwest of Cherokee, the county seat. Just a century ago Lambert has 127 residents who had four churches, a hotel, even a bank, and six stores.

Lowry town, South Dakota

At its height from 1910 until 1940, Lowry had 90 residents living there full time. Nowadays mostly hunters and fishermen visit throughout the year due to the town's proximity to the Missouri River and Swan Lake.
