Top Trail Running Events For Spring

These four events offer multiple routes for athletes of all levels

As the weather gets warmer and drier, it's time to dust off your old trail runners and hydration pack and head out for some long runs through the wilderness. For a little extra motivation, consider signing up for one of the following races. Whether you're just getting into trail running or a seasoned expert, each of these events has an option that will suit your needs. 

Golden Gate Headlands Marathon, Half Marathon & 7 Mile
Location: SausalitoCalifornia
Date: April 6
Races: 26.2, 13.1, 7 miles
Now in its 28th year, this race takes you through the Marin Headlands and Mt. Tamalpais State Park and provides beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean, Golden Gate Headlands and San Francisco Bay. In the spring, the area is especially gorgeous thanks to a variety of wildflowers. With only 400 spaces available for competitors, make sure to register early.

The Trail Marathon
Location: Pinckney, Michigan
Date: April 28
Races: Trail Marathon, 50K, 5 Mile
Although the Pinckney Recreation Area is just a 55-minute drive from Detroit, it is almost completely overlooked by the locals. Now in its 27th year, this race will give you an in-depth tour of the area via the Potawatomi Trail.

If you’re feeling extra tough, try the No Wimps Challenge—just make sure to do it for the fun, not the prize. If you complete the Trail Half Marathon and the Trail Full Marathon/50K, you’ll get a free No Wimps shirt.

Grand Ridge Trail Run
Location: Issaquah, Washington
Date: May 4th
Races: 50K Trail Run, Marathon, Half-Marathon, 5 mile
This trail will take you through Grand Ridge Park—an area comprising 1,200 acres of lush, green forest just east of Issaquah and Lake Sammamish. The park is full of Douglas fir, western red cedar trees, sword ferns and other Pacific Northwest vegetation. In early May, weather in western Washington state is ideal for running, with an average high around 64 degrees.

Don’t Fence Me In Trail Run
Location: Helena, Montana
Date: May 11th
Races: 30K, 12K, 5K, 5K Dog Walk
This event is part of the La Sportiva Mountain Cup series and aims to raise money for the organization that maintains the trail system: the Prickly Pear Land Trust. The race starts in downtown Helena, but quickly moves onto nearby trails that take runners through numerous gulches, meadows, hills and other natural features.
