It was a time when all of Europe anticipated race day. The races were incredibly difficult, and riders were treated like movie stars. It was cycling’s good old glory days, and in memoriam we take a look back at some of the photographs capturing fond moments from the 1920s to 1930s.

This throwback thursday edition features photographs from a new book entitled Goggles & Dust: Images from Cycling’s Glory Days. The book collects over 100 sensational photographs from the exciting past of competitive cycling. The photos explore the determination of this racing pioneers through their record breaking and distinct traditions. Captured in all imaginable conditions, altitudes, and situations, these photographs encompass the lifestyles of the racers and the intensities of race day.

All photos are original photographs from The Horton Collection. They document the dare devil spirits of some infamous cycling heroes such as René Vietto, Henri Pélissier, André Leducq, Ottavio Bottecchia, and Eugène Christophe. But what may be most impressive, is the feats the photographers went to to capture some of these important and beautiful moments that made cycling history.
