You don’t have to wait for the official start of winter, which is December 21, because you can start skiing months earlier. Make your favorite time of the year last as long as possible.

There are plenty of early-bird areas that turn on the lifts as far forward as the end of October and early November, due to their advanced snowmaking machines or high elevation.

There’s one thing about winter that’s far more important than all the others for avid skiers and boarders and that’s enjoying quality time on the mountain. Whether you’re trying to improve your skills or just looking to have some fun, getting out early in the season is a treat.

Taking some turns early sets you up for a great season. Early tracks will serve as a warm-up, you’ll get the benefit of skiing next to virtually no one, and there will be no lines of people waiting for the lifts.

Arapahoe Basin is usually the first to open in the U.S., and it’s open now. But from California to Vermont , other mountains aren’t far behind. If you don’t mind taking the trip, you could be skiing much sooner than you think.
