No need to exaggerate the size of your catch: Steelhead—the rainbow trout that Michiganders consider the “crown jewel” of their rivers—up to 36 inches long are spawning in the Manistee River during April and early May. One noteworthy guide service claims (with no commercial interests in mind) that this April is on track to be the best on record, and that this year’s fish are the biggest they’ve seen.
