Obesity Busters to Keep You Fit and Healthy

As U.S. adult obesity rates hit a new high, follow these tips to keep weight gain in check

Obesity rates in the U.S. have reached a new high, according to the latest poll from Gallup Well-Being. The adult obesity rate, so far this year, is 27.7%, against 27.1% across the whole of 2013— the highest annual rate Gallup and Healthways have measured since beginning to track obesity in 2008. Back then, the obesity rate was 25.5%.

Obesity is rising fastest, Gallup finds, among those over 65, those living in the East and Americans who earn $90,000 or more a year. Young adults aged 18 to 29 years remain the group least likely to be obese, Gallup says. That group's obesity rate has fallen slightly so far this year, a rare bright spot in an otherwise dismal picture.

"These data suggest, at best, no retreat in the obesity epidemic and, at worst, a deterioration," says Janna Lacatell, Healthways Lifestyle Solutions Director.
