Choosing to adopt a dog or add a new puppy to the family is a big decision. But choosing a name for your new pup can be just as important. There are plenty of potential names you can give to your dog — maybe you can name them after a favorite song, movie or even your grandpa. However, you should know that not every name makes a great name for your pup.

Bad for Dogs? Common Foods You Might Not Know Can Harm Your Pet

You finally have your dream dog, whether it’s because they won’t make you sneeze or they are a perfect breed for a senior, but what are you going to name it? According to the American Kennel Club, names are essential to a puppy’s training and socialization. Dogs have an easier time hearing hard consonants and long vowels in names like Lucky or Benny. So it probably wouldn’t be smart to give them old-fashioned names like Dorothy or Bartholomew.

It would also be helpful to find a name with only one or two syllables. This way it will be easier for you to call their attention and for them to understand. However, be careful of names like Kit or Bo because the sounds are similar to basic commands such as "sit" or "no." This will cause confusion for your furry friend.

Also, don’t only call your dog’s name when they are doing something negative such as spilling dog food all over the floor or trekking mud in the house. Use their name frequently for good situations too so they won’t associate their name with something negative or a punishment.
