Hurricane season begins on June 1 and ends on Nov. 30. As families ready their home for tropical storms, the continuing coronavirus pandemic now requires an additional layer of preparedness.

How Many Lives Social Distancing Saved, According to a Study

In planning for hurricane season during the coronavirus outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people allow themselves more time than usual to prepare emergency food, water and medical supplies. The CDC encourages everyone to consider home delivery for disaster supplies and to fill prescriptions in advance.

When establishing an evacuation plan, the CDC urges everyone to prepare a “go kit” fit with items that may protect from the coronavirus, such as hand sanitizer, liquid soap and cloth face coverings. Individuals are still encouraged to check in on neighbors and loved ones, now at the recommended distance of 6 feet apart. Plans must also be made to care for any pets.

For those planning to seek shelter at a public disaster shelter, first check with local officials about what shelter spaces are available for 2020. Coronavirus may have altered previous plans. While in a public shelter, avoid touching high-touch surfaces, keep a 6-feet distance from others, wash your hands often and wear a cloth face covering. Do all this to stop the spread of germs and ensure your safety and the safety of others in the shelter, including at-risk populations.
