2020 was the year of DIY. Beyond bread baking, people spent their time in quarantine making their own face masks, cleaning products, trendy foods and time-consuming crafts. Much of these projects started with a quick search in the same place: Google. From viral recipes to personal protective equipment, here are the top 10 trending “how to make” searches on Google in 2020.

If only we could all be more tech-savvy. Several individuals turned to Google for advice on how to turn their phone’s wallpaper from a still photo into a live, moving image. Luckily, the answer for this is simple: either alter your settings or download a third-party app.

Cleaning and disinfecting took on an entirely new level of importance in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of sticking to CDC-approved cleaning products, many looked to Google for ways to make disinfectant wipes at home, most likely because they were out of stock everywhere else.

Teachers have gone above and beyond in 2020. To keep students engaged during remote learning, several crafted entire classrooms out of digital images on PowerPoint or Google Slides. Personalized emojis called Bitmojis were made to look like teachers and added like stickers to classroom presentations.

Much like the previous search, this query shows just how much people love personalized emojis. Facebook avatars launched in the United States in May. Soon, Facebook feeds were flooded with users introducing their friends to their cartoon clones.

All you need is 25 minutes and three common kitchen ingredients to knock out this next trending search. Back in August, fluffy and low-carb cloud bread took the TikTok world by storm. If in the mood to try it yourself, this recipe is super customizable. Add sprinkles, food dye or vanilla extract to alter the color and flavor how you like.

Instead of purchasing single-use medical masks, many people looked to Google for ways to make reusable cloth masks at home without a sewing machine. Some solutions include using hair ties, elastic headbands and safety pins.

Throughout the year, people looked to make face masks out of another common household fabric: the bandana. However, bandana masks have since been found to be one of the least effective face mask styles. Better stick with store-bought or homemade masks with layers of fabric.

Another viral recipe ranks third in top trending “how to make” searches this year. Whipped coffee, also called Dalgona coffee, starts off as a tablespoon each of sugar, instant coffee and water. After vigorous whisking, the mixture turns to a fluffy and strong coffee cloud meant to be poured over a cup of milk and ice.

Our final mask inquiry of this list lands in second place. Search engine users turned to Google for more general ways to make face masks out of fabric, not just bandanas. Wearing a mask when out in public is just one COVID-era etiquette tip to follow.

Hand sanitizer was the highest trending “how to make” Google search in 2020. However, even the most effective homemade hand sanitizer cannot take the place of good old-fashioned hand washing. So wash your hands frequently and look forward to more searches and more how-to projects in the new year.
