Made into more than 25 languages and played in more than 120 countries around the world, Scrabble has truly become a phenomenon since its debut more than 80 years ago. If you’re planning on busting out your board for a game to celebrate National Scrabble Day on April 13, it might be time to brush up on some vocabulary words that will help you outsmart the competition.
After all, the OSPD (Official Scrabble Players Dictionary) and OSW (Official Scrabble Words) list include thousands of acceptable words, with 6,500 being added in 2015 alone. All these words are between two and 15 letters long.
According to Hasbro, experts average between 330-450 points per game, but there are some random and rare words that can be played in the game that are worth that many points in a single play. In fact, the man who holds the record for the highest-scoring Scrabble game by one player with 830 points earned 365 of those points on one single, epic word.
While the highest-value word in all of Scrabble is 41 points, it’s value can be upped by the board’s bonus tiles (double letter score, triple letter score, double word score and triple word score) as well as what’s known as a “bingo” - a 50-point bonus you get for playing all seven tiles from your rack in one move.
Here are 21 words that combine length and high-value letters so you can score big in your next game of Scrabble.
