Playing two-letter words is also a way to get through a turn when you’re feeling stuck. Perhaps that’s why some of the top online searches including Scrabble are questions like “Is et a Scrabble word?” “Is xe a Scrabble word” or “Is ja a Scrabble word?”
While “et” is indeed a playable word, according to Merriam-Webster’s “The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary,” “xe” and “ja” unfortunately are not. Q and Z tiles are worth 10 points each, while J and X are worth eight, which is why many players are desperate to play these when they can, especially when the word lines up with a bonus double- or triple-letter square.
The highest-value two-letter words include “za,” which is slang for pizza, and “qi,” the vital force that in Chinese thought is inherent in all things. Lower but still desirable combos are the Greek letters “xi” and “xu,” “ax,” “ex,” “ox” and “jo,” a Scottish word for sweetheart.
