What You Actually Gain From Cutting Dairy Out of Your Diet
Dairy foods have been an increasingly controversial subject. Are they really such a good calcium and Vitamin D source? Many experts are not saying “no.” There is also more and more evidence that dairy can be harmful and should be avoided at all costs. “Fermented foods, like milk, are meant to be consumed in small quantities,” Dr. John Douillard, author of Eat Wheat says. There are several good reasons for that.
You will lose weight
“Dairy products are highly acidic and they need to be avoided,” Dr. Daryl Gioffre, founder of Alkamind and celebrity nutritionist, says. Anytime something acidic is introduced into your body, it has a buffer system to help neutralize those acids. One of those primary buffers is fat, he adds. “Your body would rather hold onto fat, encapsulating the acid or toxin, in order to protect the body from being harmed or damaged.” It is a self-protective mechanism designed to keep you healthy in the short run. In the long run, it makes you heavier and allows toxins to build up, Dr. Gioffre says.
No more bloating
People who have lactose intolerance – when the small intestine doesn’t make enough of the enzyme needed to break down lactose (natural sugar) – often suffer from bloating when they eat dairy products, even a little bit of cheese or ice cream. The undigested sugar then goes to the large intestine ad mixes with the bacteria there causing the swelling of the stomach.
You may live longer
The high content of lactose in milk has been linked to oxidative stress, which in turn affects the risk of mortality. For each daily glass of milk you drink your risk of death increases by 15 percent, according to a study. Researchers concluded that women who drank three or more glasses of milk per day may be twice as likely to die over the next two decades, compared to those who consumed less than one glass a day.
By nature dairy has a growth hormones; but it’s the growth hormones that have been added so the cows can grow even faster that disrupt normal hormone production. Dr. Douillard says. Milk contains hormones that can contribute to breakouts on the skin. It contains anabolic steroids, according to research. Their presence adds to the potency of milk as a stimulant of acne.
You’ll also cut saturated fats
There are saturated fats in milk, Dr. Douillard says. You’re better off without them as they can increase your risk for heart disease and other health problems. Full-fat dairy products are among the main sources of saturated fat in people’s diets, so keeping them low is the best way to reduce, according to Harvard School of Public Health. If you must consume dairy, look for dairy from grass-fed cattle; it has 500 percent more conjugated linoleic acid or CLA, which of good for weight loss, heart health and the immune system, Dr. Douillard says.
You get rid of an a poor calcium source
“Milk is not the best source of calcium,” Dr. Douillard says. “That would be leafy greens like spinach and kale.” Other good sources of calcium are oysters, sardines, and almonds. Stay away from fortified orange juice. Fiber is eliminated during processing, leaving the juice with empty calories and lots of sugar.
You’ll cut down sugar
Dairy products already have a lot of sugar, Dr. Douillard says. “But flavored yogurt has a lot of extra added sugar.” Sugar, especially in excess, is one of the worst things you can put in your body. The liver is overloaded, your cholesterol is up, tooth enamel gets destroyed, it makes you tired, your immune system is weakened. Added sugars are added to products as ingredients to extend shelf life and make the food taste better, but they don’t naturally occur in the food.
Better thyroid health
The first step in treating patients with thyroid problems is getting them off gluten. When the body can’t tolerate gluten, it creates antibodies to attack the gluten. As they circulate in the blood, the antibodies get to the thyroid and cross-react, attacking the gland itself. Cow’s milk is also known to interfere with absorption of thyroid supplement.
While yogurt is a good source of probiotics, most, if not all dairy, are loaded with sugar, artificial sweeteners, harmful fillers, and yeast which are three things you need to avoid like the plague, Dr. Gioffre says. “They are all very congestive to your digestive system, and because of their acidic nature, your body will hold onto fat to neutralize the acid they produce in your body.”
Congestion will clear
Drinking cold milk when sick can cause congestion, Dr. Douillard says. “The classic thing to do when your kid gets sick is to get them off dairy,” he adds. Casein, the naturally occurring protein in dairy products, can promote the formation of mucus, and thicken existing mucus, causing congestion. “Turmeric and honey are a better choice [for treatment],” he adds.
Smaller chance of osteoporosis
Each year, osteoporosis leads to more than 1.5 million fractures, including 300,000 broken hips. Despite what we were all led to believe, milk leaches calcium from your bones, not the other way around, Dr. Gioffre says.
Lower risk of certain cancers
Research suggests that there could be a link between dairy intake and the risk of developing ovarian and prostate cancers. Men who eat a lot of red meat or high-fat dairy products appear to have a slightly higher chance of getting prostate cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. High levels of galactose, a sugar released by the digestion of lactose in milk, have been studied as possibly damaging to the ovaries and leading to ovarian cancer, according to Harvard School of Public Health.
Vitamin D and calcium are dependent on each other for bone health. Vitamin D regulates the level of calcium in your body, and maintaining healthy vitamin D levels nourishes your bones. But, after 12 years of study, Harvard researchers noted a correlation between dairy consumption and increased hip fractures in women. “Milk is fortified with calcium and Vitamin D-2, which is a synthetic form of Vitamin D, and it doesn’t act the same way as the Vitamin D we get from the sun,” he adds.
