Scary Signs You’re Sitting Too Much
Unless you’re a professional fitness instructor, dog walker, swimmer, runner, retail associate, waiter, chef or crossing guard, you’re probably sitting too much. There aren’t many ways around it if you have a 9-to-5 job, or even a job that requires you to fly or drive places for long hours. Plus, after a long day of sitting and looking at screens, you may be tired and even want to lay down. All that time on your butt (or on your back) could mean seriously bad news for your health.
Chronic pain, high anxiety, problems sleeping, and weight gain could all mean that you are spending too much time sitting. Whether you’re at work, in your car, or on your bed, take notice of how often you find yourself sitting down and take the opportunity (when you can) to stand up and walk around. Moving around every day, whether it be taking a walk, going for a run, or joining a spin class, can help reverse some of the issues caused by sitting too much.
If you find yourself suffering from any of these symptoms, it could be one of the scary signs that you’re sitting too much.
If you’re not aware of your posture, you might be slumped over while you sit and putting a strain on your back. Every day as you fall into your comfortable seated position to work, you sink further and further. If your back has been hurting a lot recently, you’re probably sitting too much.
Being in front of a computer all day or being isolated alone at your desk can cause you to be depressed. If you’re sitting alone too often, get up and walk around! Say hi to someone. Make a new friend! If your depression continues, consider seeing a therapist.
If you eat at your desk and stay glued to your seat in a hunched manner, your body will have a more difficult time with digestion. If you must eat at your desk, stretch or walk around after — just for a minute. It will help with your gurgling tummy.
You might think that if you’re feeling tired, you should sit. But really, you’re feeling tired because you’re sitting. You will increase your energy by moving around. Go for a walk, even if it’s just to get some coffee.
Prolonged sitting can lead to headaches. If you’ve noticed that you’ve been having more and more headaches recently, sitting might be the culprit.
Feeling more anxious than usual? It could be from holding your body in the same position for hours and hours. Try stretching.
Staying in the same seated position all day and then going home to lay flat on your back may be the root cause of why you aren’t sleeping well. Your inactive body is getting too much rest. You need to expend energy.
If you sit too much, blood will pool in your feet and ankles, causing them to swell.
If you’ve recently developed varicose veins, it may be from sitting too much. You’re putting too much pressure on the veins in your lower body, and this could lead to serious circulatory issues.
Not expending the energy that you take in can lead to weight gain. So, if you’re eating at your desk and never taking a walk, going for a run, or exercising, and you notice that you’re gaining weight–sitting too much is definitely to blame.
