Many snorers use devices to minimize snoring. There is an explosion of “do it yourself” orthodontic treatment. But oral appliances that have not been made by dentists can be, quite frankly, hazardous, says Dr. Timothy Chase, Cosmetic Dentist and Practicing Partner at SmilesNY. “People try the easy and more inexpensive solution, but come in because they don’t work.”
Aside from breathing problems, snoring can be detrimental to your heart. Excessive snoring may cause thickening in the walls of the arteries that link the heart to the brain, according to research. The increased condensing in the lining of the two large blood vessels that supply the brain with oxygenated blood is a precursor to atherosclerosis.
This is just another reason not to play with your health and pay attention to what you are doing to stop snoring. What you should not do, Dr. Chase says, is head to the pharmacy for an over-the-counter anti-snoring device.
