The definition of dehydration is the body getting rid of more fluids, usually through sweating or going to the bathroom more than normal, than it absorbs. The result affects every organ. They don’t have enough water to perform at optimal level.
People won’t feel it right away as most of them drink water only when they feel thirsty. However, you’re already dehydrated at that point. Your skin, muscles and mood are the first victims, but they are not the only ones. The kidneys, heart and cholesterol levels also suffer.
Adequate hydration is dependent on many factors. They include size, activity level and sweat rate. Severe dehydration – losing 25-30 percent of total water volume – can even lead to death. You have probably have heard of the rule eight glasses a day? That should be the minimum.
You need more in the summer season as you engage in more outdoor activities. They will leave you tired and sweaty, so it’s important to keep the importance of staying hydrated in mind.
Signs of dehydration include dry mouth, sleepiness, decreased urine output, dry skin, inability to produce tears, headache, constipation, dizziness or lightheadedness and, of course, extreme thirst.
