With health care reform underway and U.S. life expectancy declining for the first time since 1993, the personal-finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2017’s Healthiest Cities in America.

To identify the places where health is a priority, WalletHub’s analysts compared 150 of the largest U.S. cities across 34 key metrics. The data set ranges from “cost of doctor visit” to “fruit and vegetable consumption” to “fitness clubs per capita.” Key dimensions include: 1) Health Care, 2) Food, 3) Fitness and 4) Green Space.

In terms of how much you’ll pay to visit a doctor, it seems that you’re better of living in three southern states. The lowest cost of medical visits is in Jacksonville, Florida, followed by Laredo in Texas, Port St. Lucie also in Florida, and Huntsville and Montgomery in Alabama. The highest cost is in Worcester and Boston in Massachusetts, Providence in Rhode Island, Madison and Milwaukee in Wisconsin, and Anchorage in Alaska.

An interesting fact to observe is that, despite the low fees for visiting a doctor, southern cities have the highest premature death rate – Mobile in Alabama, Augusta in Georgia, New Orleans in Louisiana, and St. Louis in Missouri. On the other hand, the top 5 major cities in the “lowest premature death rate” category are all in California.

Another interesting observation is that all top six cities with the fewest mental health counselors per capita are in Texas, starting with San Antonio, El Paso, Grand Prairie, Arlington, Fort Worth, and Dallas.
