Even on a lousy day it’s almost impossible not to smile at the sight of a happy dog wagging its tail. It has been long shown that dogs make you healthier; they improve your mood, help your heart and even better your social life.

According to NBCNEWS, research has shown that kids who live in a home with a pet, score lower on clinical measures of anxiety. Pets also help children with attention deficit disorder and, according to a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, “children who have a dog or cat or are around dogs and cats during the first year of life are reported to be healthier and have fewer respiratory infections than children without contact to these animals.”

Owning a dog also benefits adults. They are great exercise motivation, help decrease blood pressure, and may even reduce the risk for stroke.
