14 Foods That Are Aging You

The expression “you are what you eat” is a cliché because it is true. The worse food you put in your body, the worse you will feel. People usually associate unhealthy food with weight gain, but skin damage comes before the extra inches around the waistline. “If one night before bed you’re eating a lot of processed foods that is high in sodium and trans fat, your skin will look bad the next morning,”  Deborah Malkoff-Cohen, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, says. Other factors also play a role but not as much as what goes into your body.

Non-organic milk

Unless the milk is organic, it has a lot of growth hormones and other inflammatory substances that affects acne by clogging your pores, Malkoff says. Skin breakouts are other possible consequences, she adds. Dairy can mess with a person’s hormone levels, too.

Sweet alcoholic drinks

Pina Coladas and margaritas have ton of sugar. If you have one Jameson on the rocks a day, this is OK, but not sugary cocktails, Malkoff says. The extra sugar combines with proteins and hurts the collagen, which makes up a large part of the skin, making it look saggy and you older.  “Alcohol dehydrates the body skin, also makes you eat worse,” she adds.

Refined sugar

Refined sugar is toxic to the body in many ways. It hurts your skin by attaching itself to collagen, making the skin look stiff and inflexible, Malkoff says. The process of glycation begins, she adds, which creates advanced glycation end products, or AGES, which are very harmful to the skin. Sugar also sticks to the teeth, leading to decay.

Margarine

“This is just chemical,” Malkoff says. There is nothing in it that is good for the body. It’s full of bad fats that dehydrate you, causing wrinkles. A study showed that higher consumption of margarine was linked to increased skin wrinkling. Margarine is made of vegetable oils, which are high in polyunsaturated fats. They lead to inflammation and cell mutation, which are linked to many health issues.

Salty foods

“Sodium sucks the water out of your skin,” Malkoff says. The body responds by retaining water which expands the extra cellular volume. As a result, you have about 1.5 liters (about 1.5 pints) of extra cellular fluid, making you look “puffy” and older. Watch out for these items that are surprisingly high in salt. It’s not just putting extra salt on your foods.

Energy drinks

They have caffeine, which is terrible, especially for kids, and a lot of sugar. “They are also very acidic which harms your teeth, leaving them prone to stains,” Malkoff says. They have organic acids that are potentially very erosive to dental enamel because of their ability to breakdown calcium, which is needed to strengthen teeth and prevent gum disease, according to a study.

Complex carbs

They are bad because they will raise your sugar levels very quickly, which will soon lead to a quick drop, Malkoff says. Too many complex carbs from pasta, bagels, or pretzels can damage the collagen and fibers wreaking havoc on the skin, leading to acne or even rosacea, a condition that causes redness and often small, red, pus-filled bumps on the face.

Charred meats

Charring meat is not a good practice, despite the fact that so many people like their meat “well-done,” Malkoff says. Other than the fact eating burnt meat is linked to diabetes, heart and lung disease, she adds, it causes inflammation which can lead to the breaking down of collagen in the skin.

Fried food

When oil and fat are exposed to very high temperatures, free radicals are formed. They are a major cause for aging. They break down collagen in the skin, making it look old and wrinkled. In addition, trans fats cause inflammation in the body. They raise your bad cholesterol and clog and stiffen the arteries, which makes the skin look old, Malkoff says. Also, trans fats make you vulnerable to UV damage, according to research, which the biggest cause of premature aging.

Gluten

Gluten is bad if the body can’t tolerate it,” Malkoff says. Gluten can cause Leaky Gut Syndrome when gluten or bad bacteria can escape into the circulatory system, leading to inflammation. Dermatologists should be familiar with the appraisal of gluten sensitive enteropathy and should be able to search for an underlying gluten intolerance, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) says.

Anything from the bakery

The problem is that most bakeries cook with hydrogenated oil, a kind of trans fat, instead of butter because it is more expensive, Malkoff says. “It is really bad for you,” she adds. “I’d rather eat ice-cream with five ingredients than a cookie from a bakery.” Companies don’t have to list trans fats on the ingredient label unless there are more than 0.5g. “But any amount is not healthy,” Malkoff says.

Potato chips

Potato chips are often made with olestra, a fat substitute that adds no fat, calories or cholesterol. But it sticks to vitamins A, E, D and K and carotenoids, which are antioxidant nutrients, and flushes them out of the body, according to a study. Carotenoids provide important antioxidants to help prevent premature skin damage and skin cancer. Also, a recent study found that refined carbs were the main culprit in acne.

Bacon and hotdogs

Nitrates help these foods keep their color for longer but they are not doing your body any favors. They can convert to nitrite, causing the formation of nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic chemicals, according to the CDC. These processed foods are also extremely high in sodium, which leads to dehydration and dry and old-looking skin.

Soda

It’s full of sugar and dehydrates the body. So much sugar prevents the skin from glowing, and makes it look saggy and dull. Soda also has an inflammatory effect, making it a major factor contributing to premature aging. They contain AGES, accelerating skin aging, a study shows.
