The 10 Most Affordable Pet-Friendly Cities

Pets are treated as equal member of a family. It’s no surprise that owners want to live in an area that provides the best quality of life for their furry best friend— great veterinary care, off-leash parks, and even restaurants that welcome Fido. The following list is based on The Mortgage Reports’ analysis of the most pet-friendly cities. FIDO Scores™ are highest in cities that are both pet-friendly and affordable. Pet-friendliness is determined using a score from a 2016 WalletHub study which examines 19 metrics in 100 cities -- everything from veterinary care costs to the number of hotels allowing pets.

1. Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati got a perfect FIDO score. The city offers an abundance of activities to do with your pet. Take your furry friend to the Great American Ball Park; twice a year the park invites baseball fans to bring their dogs to “Bark in the Park” to help cheer on the Cincinnati Reds, according to dogvacay.com. Wage Park is also dog-friendly; it’s a 3-acre dog park that offers doggie playsets and agility courses. If your pet needs more space, take it to Otto Armleder Dog Park, a 10-acre area with large playing fields.

2. Toledo, Ohio

Toledo comes very close to having a perfect score – 98.3. Aside from a lot of hotels and restaurants that welcome pets inside, a lot of serviced focusing on dogs and cats are offered. They have plenty of choices to play outside. For example, the Toledo Pet Farm is a fully fenced off-leash dog park. It has full course agility training equipment and other fun activities, according to Bring Fido.

3. St. Louis, Missouri

Locals take pride in their long history of being a pet-loving community. They have some of the most unique dog-friendly activities – take your dog to Laumeier Sculpture Park and explore 105-acres of large-scale outdoor sculptures. There’s also a ton of hiking trails to choose from. Walk along trails, enjoy concerts, have a picnic, at the 405-acre Jefferson Barracks Historical Park.

4. Lexington- Fayette, Kentucky

The combination of median annual income, median home price and pet-friendly rank by WalletHub make the city, which is known for its horse farms and thoroughbred racetracks, one of the most pet-friendly in the country. A locals’ favorite is the Masterson Station dog park. It is part of a huge city park that has the nicest amenities of any of the Lexington dog parks.

5. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

There are 83 pet friendly hotels in Oklahoma City, according to Bring Fido. Other vacation spots that welcome four-legged cuties include vacation rentals, bed & breakfasts, and campgrounds. The Myriad Botanical Gardens Dog Park has gotten very positive reviews by dog-owners for being clean and thorn-free.

6. Fort Wayne, Indiana

There are 20 pet friendly restaurants in Fort Wayne that welcome dogs at their outdoor tables. Many hotels and Airbnb rentals allow them in as well. There are four dog-friendly parks in the city where your pet can freely run around and play. Some even have “doggie” beaches that allow Fido to swim.

7. Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham ranked second in the pet-friendly category, according to WalletHub. Spend time with your puppy in the three off-leash dog parks in the city. Stroll along walking trails and play games on many acres of open lawn. There are 10 dog friendly activities in Birmingham, including biking, hiking and climbing.

This is one of the most underrated cities in America. There are 2 off-leash dog parks in Tulsa. The Joe Station Dog Park has sides for small and large dogs, and changes up the sides every now and then so dogs don't get bored, according to Bring Fido. Separately, Tulsa has one of the best and safest drinking water in the country.

9. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta has one of the highest numbers of pet-friendly hotels and motels – approximately 80. They also have about five vacation rentals that are dog friendly as well. If you are looking for activities you and your dog can participate in together, Atlanta has exciting dog-friendly tours, some of which include Atlanta Preservation Center Walking Tours and Oakland Cemetery. There are tons of pet sitting and dog walking opportunities too.

10. Tampa, Florida

The city boasts some of the most beautiful beaches, gardens, and thrilling theme parks, many of which are dog-friendly. There are several fenced, off-leash dog runs in dog parks that are also separated for large and small pets, and each include agility equipment.
