Giro Update: Phinney Loses the Lead
As insiders predicted, Garmin Barracuda won today’s Stage 4 team time trial, taking the first stage victory in this year’s Giro on Italian soil. The team charged through the 33.2-km course—that started and ended in Verona—in 37:04, stripping Taylor Phinney of the first place maglia rosa.
Garmin riders are now in the top four GC spots, and Phinney is in fifth, 13 seconds off the lead time. Ramunas Navarauskus leads the race, sprinter Tyler Ferrar is in second (+10 seconds) and GC contender Ryder Hesjedal is in fourth (+11 seconds).
Tomorrow, Stage 5 is a relatively flat 199-km ride from Modena to Fano. Count on a sprint finish, with world champ Mark “The Manx Missile” Cavendish looking to avenge his Stage 3 finish line crash.
