Why you should do your back to school shopping on Prime Day
Amazon's annual Prime Day is just around the corner -- the deals begin on July 15 and last for 48 hours. This online shopping spree celebrates Amazon Prime members by rewarding them with exclusive deals.
While you can find a deal on just about anything from electronics to clothing to furniture, there are plenty of deals on school supplies to be had. July is well ahead of the usual back-to-school rush, but that means that there is a greater chance of items remaining in stock.
Rather than face the crowds and risk missing out on key supplies, take advantage of everything Prime Day has to offer -- whether you are shopping for elementary school, high school, or college. In addition, there are plenty of deals to be had for teachers as well. Besides, wouldn't you rather get this task done from your desk instead of wasting a summer Saturday going to the store?
We think this is the best way to do your back-to-school shopping and have broken down the advantages and must-knows of Prime Day.
How does Prime Day work?
We know that Prime Day begins at 12 a.m. Pacific Time (in the middle of the night) on July 15 and lasts until 11:59 p.m. on July 16. What we don't know is exactly what items will be on sale, but we have some good guesses.
Prime Day is only available for Amazon Prime members. You can sign up for a free trial or purchase their month-by-month membership for access to free shipping, exclusive deals, Amazon Prime video streaming, and many more services and discounts.
Before the big day of shopping, you can "Watch" specific items using the Amazon App or Amazon Assistant to be notified if they go on sale. Creating a wishlist on your account is another good way to keep your shopping organized and be sure you don't miss anything.
Deals to look out for on Prime Day
No doubt you have a back-to-school shopping list in mind, but we've put together a list of items to keep an eye out for based on sales from past Prime Days. You should also check out the new Happy School Year page, which is full of current deals on a wide variety of supplies.
Here are some items to look for that have a good chance of popping up in Prime Day sales:
Backpacks. This must-have item is often sold at rock-bottom prices on Prime Day -- and there's a good chance you can find a deal on a bag for students of any age, whether it's a colorful bag for a preschooler, a stylish clear bag for a high schooler, or a larger backpack for a college student.
Lunch boxes. If you send your student off every day with snacks and a lunch, be sure to add a few lunch boxes or bags to your watch list. Amazon offers just about every style available -- and while there's no guarantee your pick will go on sale, you can probably find something similar.
Laptops and tablets. With more and more curriculum moving online, equipping your student with a way to connect is crucial. Past Prime Days have seen a variety of deals on Chromebooks, tablets, and laptops from major brands.
Printers. Whether you're a college student looking for a way to print out that last-minute paper or you're a homeschool teacher looking for high-quality printing, you can count on seeing a few great deals on Prime Day. Look for sales on laser and inkjet printers alike.
External hard drives. The college student or teacher who needs some extra storage or a backup drive can count on a few deals, which may include lightning-fast solid state drives as well.
Linens and sleeping bags. There's nothing quite like arriving at your dorm room and realizing your sheets won't fit on your twin XL bed. Prime Day is a great time to take advantage of the low prices on linen sets, many of which are designed for the extra long twin size that is so common in dorm rooms. For younger kids who need to be equipped for sleepovers, look out for low-priced sleeping bags -- you can expect a wide variety of styles and sizes.
Marker sets. Crayons have their time and place, but nothing beats a good market set with a wide variety of colors, and there were a few large sets for sale last year. You can also expect some deals on dry erase markers and permanent markers.
Calculators. Whether your student needs a basic calculator or a scientific calculator, you can probably find a few calculators at far less than their MSRP on Prime Day.
Dorm room essentials. Look out for items like microwaves, minifridges, and desk chairs for your college student. Don't forget items like storage bins and hanging shelves for keeping clothes and other belongings organized.
Amazon products and services. You can almost guarantee there will be deals on devices like the Amazon Kindle and Amazon Echo Dot during Prime Day. In addition, it's a great time to purchase a Prime subscription for your student, giving them access to free shipping as well as Amazon services like Prime Video and monthly free books through Audible.
