How to shop online for the best Black Friday deals

Katie Reseburg

Of all the products we see that sell out over this weekend, toys and TVs are the top ones.

You probably already have a few websites you're planning to shop on Black Friday, but once you get to the homepage, where do you go from there? Sure, Black Friday promotions will be front and center, but you may not want to just click through the home page's most prominent suggestions.

Here are some tips for finding the very best deals and tracking down the items you're specifically looking for on shopping websites where the deals are seemingly endless.

Home page

Often, there will be a slideshow of several deals pages featured right at the top/central part of the home page. Once you click on that, you will want to use filters like product category, age group of recipient, limited time offers, etc. Clicking through page after page of best sellers will often lead to confusion and frustration.

Create wish lists

It's smart to add items you want to price-check throughout the day to a wish list, because prices will often fluctuate and there may be flash sales. Also, this creates one clear, organized landing page to look at. A good rule of thumb is that if it's marked down more than 30%, you should buy at that moment. Less than that and there's a good chance the price will go down later or on Cyber Monday.

Categories with the best markdowns

We see impressive deals in the following product buckets year after year that you'd be hard-pressed to find on sale for less after Black Friday (or, they may run out and not be available in time for the holiday you're gifting for). Check out the crazy-low prices on smart tech (from TVs to watches to home security and lighting), vacuums (especially robotic ones), bakeware and kitchen appliances, toys for babies and toddlers, LEGO sets, video games and consoles, and travel gear.

Have some toys your child is betting on being under the tree? Go straight to the specific toy pages or search for the specific toy. This way, you won't be distracted by sub-par variations, and you'll add the ones you need to your cart before they run out, as hot toys tend to do on Black Friday.

Prioritize the order of items you shop for

Unless you're really dead-set on getting it now, or need it right away, a lot of kitchen appliances and trendy products like Instant Pots and Roombas will be on sale throughout the upcoming month, so if time and specific other gift items are higher priority, save can-wait items for the end of your shopping.
