Holiday items you should order before December

Some Advent calendars don’ t have doors that open to reveal treats.

No matter how well you plan, the holidays always seem to get here a little sooner than you expect. If you don't want to be caught without holiday décor and other essentials this year, there are several key items you should think about buying at least a month or two ahead. That way, you don't have to worry about products being out of stock or not arriving in time for the holidays.

If you want to be as prepared as possible, here are six holiday items that you should consider ordering before December so you can be sure you're ready to go when the festivities begin.

Holiday lights

The holiday season always seems to fly by in a hurry, so many homeowners want to decorate their house at the start of December to maximize the time they can enjoy all the festive ornamentation. That's why it's a good idea to order your holiday lights before December, so you're ready to trim your home's exterior and interior as soon as Thanksgiving is over. One of our favorites is the Noma/Inliten Holiday Wonderland Clear Christmas Light Set because the traditionally shaped lights are extremely bright. What's more, the clear color works with nearly any holiday theme -- not just Christmas -- and they're very affordable, even if you need several strands.

Christmas tree

If you're decorating your home for Christmas, the tree is obviously the star of the show. Artificial trees are a no-fuss alternative to real trees because you don't have to deal with the hassle of lugging a tree from the lot to your home or the mess of cleaning up all the pesky needles that inevitably fall off. With an artificial tree, you can put it up as early in the season as you want without worrying about it turning brown before December 25. But it's definitely an item you should order before December if you don't want to worry about your favorite one being sold out. We love National Tree's North Valley Spruce Artificial Tree, with its solid construction and lush, round shape that looks just like the real thing.

Family holiday pajamas

Family portraits are always an enjoyable way to look back on holidays past, but if you're tired of the usual photos in your fanciest holiday outfits, matching pj's for the whole gang is a fun way to go. You'll want to order the pajamas early, though, to make sure you can get everyone's correct size. Pajamagram's Flannel Matching Family Pajamas are a great option because the festive plaid design isn't over-the-top cutesy and the stretchy waistband means they're comfortable to wear. Plus, the pj's are available in sizes for everyone, including your four-legged family members.

Advent calendar

Whether you're a child or adult, the anticipation of counting down to Christmas is always one of the best parts of the holiday. An Advent calendar makes the whole experience even more fun by offering up a treat for each day you mark off. You obviously want to have your calendar by December 1, so it's an item you should definitely order early. If you're shopping for children, we love the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar. Each day, your child opens a door to discover a Star Wars-themed LEGO piece. For adults, you can find Advent calendars that include sample-size makeup or bath and body products, gourmet tea and coffee, stationery items, chocolate, or even holiday-themed spirits.

Cookie press

Home-baked cookies are one of the best parts of the holiday season, and baking them yourself can be just as enjoyable as eating them. If you're planning to bake cookies this holiday season, make sure to order your cookie press before December rolls around, so you have plenty of time. A press makes the process much easier because it easily creates cookies in festive holiday shapes without having to use a single cookie cutter. One of our favorites is the Marcato Atlas Deluxe Biscuit Maker Press, which is extremely easy to use and comes with 20 die-plates to create a variety of fun cookie shapes, from wreaths to stars to ribbons.

Roasting pan

Whether your holiday meal features turkey, pork loin, ham, or beef brisket, you'll need a good roasting pan for the big day. It comes in handy for such a wide array of recipes that you may already have one in your kitchen arsenal, but if you don't, you'll definitely want to order one before December. That way, you have the option of testing out your menu before family and friends gather at your table on the big day. We love the 16-inch Cuisinart Chef's Classic Roasting Pan, which features stainless steel for even heat distribution and dishwasher-safe cleanup.

Waiting until the last minute to do your holiday shopping is never a good idea, but if you really want to be prepared, there are several items that you can order ahead of time. Having all of these products at home before December means you can rest easy and really enjoy yourself with family and friends this holiday season.
