Dos and Don’ts of Amazon Prime Day

Don't forget to keep your Amazon boxes so you can return any products that don't turn out the way you imagined.

Amazon Prime Day is still a relatively new phenomenon. The e-commerce giant's annual celebration of itself means big deals and this year projects to be the biggest Prime Day yet - quite literally. The date is still a secret, but last year it occurred mid-July. It's your chance to splurge on something you've been eying for yourself since last holiday season, but there are some potential pitfalls you should watch out for.

Here are the dos and don'ts of Amazon Prime Day for the uninitiated:

DO make a plan. The bargains are scattered and a bit overwhelming on Prime Day. They move quickly as items get sold out in a flash. The best way to overcome this is by making a list of items that you want to procure by the end of the day. With new sales popping up all day long, you'll want to know whether you really want that new item or not before the madness begins.

DON'T buy blindly. Like with most sales, a product will go up for sale and there's no way of telling if you're actually getting good value for it. Use an Amazon price tracker like CamelCamelCamel to combat this. You'll have full confidence while using the one-click buying feature on Amazon.

DO check Amazon throughout the day. Prime Day offers "lightning deals" over the course of the event. Don't miss out on something you really wanted because you checked the site in the morning and never checked back.

DON'T buy for just yourself. This is the perfect opportunity to surprise the people in your life with the things they've been wanting for months. Become the hero of your family/friend group by providing Christmas in July for the people who matter most to you.

DO use Amazon Smile. If you go to smile.amazon.com, you can choose a non-profit that will receive a portion of the proceeds from all you spend on Prime Day. It's a worthwhile two-for-one in that you can make a difference while stocking up on the goods you really want.

DON'T forget about your pets. Every year, Amazon includes some great offers for pet items on Prime Day. It's not easy to pull the trigger on a specialty item for your favorite furry friend when they're at full price. But if they're severely discounted, you don't really have a reason not to set him or her up with the best stuff available.

DO think ahead. Remember how stressful holiday shopping was last year? What if you lessened that months ahead of time by taking care of several people now? The deals will approximate what you'll find on Black Friday and it feels good to work ahead of time.
