The best VR headset for PlayStation
The popularity of virtual reality has grown immensely over the last few years. Made primarily for PC applications, devices like the Oculus and Vive have sold thousands of units. But sadly this hasn’t been the case for gaming consoles like Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation.
In fact, there is only one virtual reality headset available for console gamers: the PlayStation VR. With so little choice, you might as well get the whole setup and some games to boot, like the PlayStation VR Mega Pack.
What to know before you buy a VR headset for PlayStation
Compatible games with PlayStation VR
If you are new to the world of VR, you might be surprised to learn that there are over 200 games available for the PlayStation that are VR-compatible. That seems like a lot, but keep in consideration what type of games you enjoy. If there are only a few genres or titles that you find exciting, your choices might be limited.
Also, take note: PSVR was originally launched for the PS4, and although the PS5 is now on the market, the next-generation PSVR2 has yet to launch. This means that those using a PS5 will need the PSVR components from the PS4 in order to play VR games on the newest console until the next iteration drops sometime in 2022. Be sure to research just what components you’ll need so you’re not left disappointed when you try to boot up a VR game on your new PS5.
PlayStation VR accessories
The headset is the most important thing that you need to play VR games, but there are several accessories as well. These include the motion controllers, foot rudders and the aim controllers, which turn your wand into a gun for better control. If the games that you are going to play support an accessory, consider if you need it to have more fun.
VR setups require ample space
You would be surprised to find out how many people buy VR headsets, only to realize that they don’t have enough space in their living room or where the PlayStation console is set up. So, keep in mind the space that you have available, and make some room if you don’t.
VR headset for PlayStation features
The PSVR headset
Naturally, the headset is the most important part of the whole VR setup. It is this head-worn device that allows you to see all the games and content in their VR glory. It connects to the console through an HDMI cable. It also doesn’t need to be charged like the controllers, as it gets its power from the PlayStation console.
The PSVR motion camera
The motion camera is what the PS4 console uses to determine where the VR headset is in the room. The camera detects LEDs that are embedded in the headset and relays your position to the console through motion tracking.
PSVR Move motion controllers
Depending on the games that you play, you can use the Move motion controllers. These wands give you better control over the action and are much easier to use than the traditional PS4 controller. You simply move them around to direct the action or follow the in-game tutorials on how to use them for a specific title.
VR headset for PlayStation cost
The PlayStation VR headset retails for around $400, and it is the first thing that you’ll need to play VR games. Bundles that include the headset and some games can retail for between $600 and $700, while you can pay upward of $1,000 if you buy the PS4 console, the headset and some games together.
VR headset for PlayStation FAQ
Can you use the PlayStation Camera on a PS5?

Can you use the PSVR if you wear glasses?
A. Yes, the PSVR headset has adjustable bands, so it can easily be changed to accommodate eyeglasses. The inner part of the headset is also large enough for glasses to comfortably fit inside the viewing cavity.
