Best air fryers for low-cal cooking

BestReviews Staff

You can use an air fryer as a food warmer or a slow roaster for “low and slow” barbecue meat preparation – no oil required.

Are you interested in eating healthier? The air fryer is a health-focused cooking appliance you can use to prepare great-tasting "air-fried" foods with far less fat and calories than deep-fried foods.

An air fryer uses superheated air and less than one tablespoon of cooking oil to duplicate the satisfying taste, texture, and mouthfeel of traditionally deep-fried foods such as French fries, chicken wings, and pizza rolls. To use it, you place your food in a basket in the cooking chamber. An infrared heating element located at the top of the chamber radiates hot air. A small convection fan forces the hot air to circulate around and through the food as it cooks. A tablespoon or less of cooking oil vaporizes into droplets and "fries" the food on contact.

The infrared heating element is also capable of browning, and the convection heat without oil can perform cooking tasks such as grilling, roasting, steaming, and baking. Is your mouth watering yet? If so, check out three of our favorite air fryers for more information.

Philips XL Airfryer

With a capacity to feed a family of four, this smart-looking air fryer with digital touchscreen offers several great food prep options. It cooks food faster than some other air fryers on the market - a plus on those busy nights when you want to eat healthy but don't have a lot of time. There is a bit of a learning curve and it costs some money, but if you want the very best, this is one to consider.

BLACK+DECKER HF110SBD 2-Liter Oil Free Air Fryer

This is a great little machine that sells for a nice price. Not only is it affordable, it's also very easy to clean. Potential buyers should note the capacity before purchasing, however; this item does not hold as much food as some others.

GoWISE USA GW22621 4th Generation Electric Air Fryer

A lot of thought has gone into the feature set of this air fryer. It has a touchscreen, a timer, automatic shut-off, and seven preset programs. The product may not be as durable as some higher-end air fryers, however, so if you plan to use it daily, it might not be the most hardy choice.
