Pre-Gym Habits That Hurt Your Workout
Get the most out of your workout and cut out these pre-gym habits:
1. Drinking a lot of Water
It’s very important to stay hydrated, but drinking too much water before a workout is a bad idea. All of the water will stay crammed in your stomach making you extremely uncomfortable also disrupting your workout because of frequent trips to the bathroom. According to Lifehacker, “general guidelines are to drink 17 to 20 ounces of water 2 to 3 hours before exercising, another 8 ounces during your warm-up (or 20 to 30 minutes before exercising), 7 to 10 ounces every 10 to 20 minutes during exercise, and 8 ounces of water within 30 minutes after exercising.”
2. Eating too much
Eating too much will cause digestion issues and will slow down your workouts. Do not have protein before your workout and do not eat too much fiber. Protein shakes contain processed ingredients and loads of sugar that will lead to bloating and fatigue.
3. Lack of sleep
Lack of sleep can cause a number of negative effects on your mind and body. If you spent the night tossing and turning, maybe you should consider trying to get in a few extra hours of sleep before work. Rather than, waking up early to hit the gym. According to LiveStrong, “Sleep deprivation can decrease your energy levels, which makes it harder for you to get a good workout.”
4. Drinking too much coffee
Yes, coffee gives you a great energy boost and it’s not bad to have one cup before heading to the gym. But, drinking too much of it will cause you to crash. Ultimately resulting in fatigue and dehydration, leading to an unproductive workout.
5. Forgetting to stretch
Don’t forget to warm up your muscles and practice dynamic stretching before your workout. It helps maximize your performance level by improving your blood flow, increasing your flexibility and decreasing your chances of injury.
6. Not planning ahead
Put your clothes together the night before or take a few extra minutes before heading to the gym. Make sure you check that you have everything you need. We all know, if we forget one thing our entire workout can be completely thrown off. Some items to remember (other than the obvious clothing): weight-lifting gloves, MP3 player, headphones, yoga mat, towel and water bottle.
