Don’t get discouraged; you’re not the only person out there who’s already given up on their resolutions. It’s understandable, especially considering the stresses of the holidays and the pressure to get back on track with your daily routine.
There are many reasons New Year’s resolutions fail. Maybe you didn’t organize your time efficiently; you set unrealistic goals; or you didn’t anticipate problems and plan for setbacks. Regardless to what your reason is, by reading this story you have made a step in the right direction.
Having the right mindset — positive and motivated — is what got you here. Instead of just forfeiting altogether, you decided to start fresh, re-launch your resolutions and reset your goals.
The first steps to re-launching your resolutions have to do with goal-setting. Break your goals down into smaller, short-term goals; this will help keep you motivated, says Michelle Roots, owner and personal trainer at CORE Conditioning. After you have determined your goals, make sure you write them down and set daily or weekly reminders, says Tara Linitz, MS RD, Nutrition Manager at EatLove. “Having tangible reminders can keep us on track.”
Accountability is key; without it, you’re likely to hit the same roadblocks. “Have someone take the journey with you for support,” Linitz says. “For example, if you’ve resolved to cook more at home, get the whole family involved and make it a fun activity!”
It’s common and normal to hit setbacks along the way, so make sure you plan for obstacles and consider possible solutions. If you fall off track, don’t get down on yourself; “embrace failure, get over it, and start fresh the next day,” Roots says.
