Maintaining your health is important, and being that you probably spend the majority of your waking hours at work, it’s important to maintain a healthy office environment.

Do you work from your home office? Maybe you go to work and sit in a cubicle. Either way, there are many things you can do to increase your overall health and wellbeing.

For instance, letting your papers and files pile up on your desk is a recipe for disaster; staying organized is crucial to your health. Sitting down for extended periods can slow your brain function and make you more prone to heart damage, so make sure you stand up frequently.

1. Stand up more

Sitting down for an extended period of time can be harmful to your health. According to The Lyons Share, sitting for long periods makes you more prone to heart damage, weak bones, slower brain function, an overproductive pancreas, back pain and quicker muscle degeneration. Tip: Rather than sitting down on the phone, stand up.

2. Open the windows


Open the windows in your office to let fresh air come in. A stuffy environment holds all of the air in, not allowing it to circulate. 3. Decorate your desk

Decorating your desk is a simple way to achieve a healthier work environment. Try feng shui, the Chinese practice of arranging objects to attract positive energy. For instance the back left corner of your desk is a great place to put a plant, it is said that this space attracts money. Also keep the center area of your desk free from clutter, this is said to help attract good energy.

4. Look away from the screen


Staring at the computer screen for extended periods of time can result in Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). According to the American Optometric Association, the most common symptoms associated with CVS include eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes and neck and shoulder pain. Take a break from the screen and look the opposite way to avoid these symptoms.

5. Add different colors

The colors that surround you may actually have an impact on your health and overall productivity. For instance, blue is said to help workers focus on the task at hand, green is good for people who work long hours because it doesn’t cause eye fatigue, and yellow can help stimulate creativity (Entrepreneur).

6. Bring a plant into your office

Set a plant down in your office to enhance your surroundings and clean the air. Research has shown that plants help absorb unhealthy toxins from the technology surrounding you and they help increase productivity.

7. Clean your keyboard

Your desktop carries an immense amount of bacteria. Bring sanitizing wipes to your office and make sure you are constantly wiping down your keyboard. The bacterium that accumulates has the ability to make you sick.

8. Get natural light


Studies have shown that natural lighting increases productivity, decreases stress and reduces fatigue. Adjust your work space and relocate to an area by a window.


9. Squeeze in a workout


Do you have a free moment? Try to get in a quick workout. Bring a set of small weights to work with you and do some exercises. Some other tips to get moving at work include frequently changing positions at your desk, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and adding more walking to your commute.

10. Organization


The clutter on your desk is making you more stressed than you may realize. Keeping an organized desk will limit distractions and increase efficiency.
