Consuming protein (in this instance, a whey protein shake) can help increase muscle growth, especially after an intense workout.
That being said, one of the best ways to increase the absorption of the protein you consume post-workout is to drink it with some carbohydates (dextrose). A healthy dose of carbs after a workout can cause an insulin surge. This causes a more complete uptake of protein by the muscles!
You don’t have to worry about consuming a large number of carbs either because after an intense workout your body is like a carb and calorie furnace. It uses them very fast to replenish energy stores and to help the body return to its’ normal resting state!
