October is here, and that means it’s finally time to carve pumpkins, put up the cobwebs and fill baskets with candy. Halloween is a holiday that’s loved by both children and adults, giving everyone a chance to dress like their favorite character, pay homage to history and more. 

But there are so many costumes to choose from, so how do you choose? Google Trends has powered up Halloween site Fright Geist for 2019 to reveal the top trending Halloween costumes across the country. Here are the most searched Halloween costumes in each state during the month of September 2019 to give you some inspiration.

Alaska: Pirate

Alaska has an economy that is heavily dominated by fishing, so it may not come as a surprise that the state’s costume of choice, a pirate, screams love of the sea.

Alabama: Witch

This year, the The Heart of Dixie has been Googling witch costumes in September, which is quite a flip from last year’s favorite of Mickey Mouse

Arkansas: Witch

Crystal healing is a well-known practice of witchcraft, and maybe its recent gain in popularity got the diamond-mining state of Arkasas excited to represent for the witches this Halloween.

Arizona: Clown

Unlike other states that are specifically searching  for infamous “It” clown Pennywise, Arizona likes to keep its clown options open.

The home of Hollywood is getting inspiration from the 2019 remake of “Child’s Play” and its star,  nightmare doll Chucky. The terrorizing redhead toy is the Golden State’s most searched Halloween costume.

Fun fact: When the baseball stadium for the Colorado Rockies was being built in the ‘90s, dinosaur bones were found. The team and state embraced the find with its giant purple dinosaur mascot (no, not that one), so it’s no surprise that the prehistoric pals are the most searched costume in the state.

Although Iowa is the number one producer of corn and food is an ultimate Halloween costume, it would be smart to stay out of the Iowa corn fields on Halloween. There might be a Pennywise or two lurking since “It” is the most-searched costume idea in the state.
