While deep-cleaning your home, you might come across a couple of things you want to change around the house. Maybe you’re tired of the color of your kitchen cabinets or you wish your dining set looked as new as when you first bought it. If you’re spending more time at home, now is the time to tackle a great DIY project: upcycling your furniture.

If it’s been a long time since you last bought new furniture, you likely have some old living room chairs with a rip in the cushions or some of the stuffing coming out. But you don’t need to break the bank to buy a new lounger. You can simply reupholster the seat cushions with fresh new fabric or give the chair’s arms and legs a new paint job.

You sit on your couch while you’re binging happy shows and movies, so there’s a great chance you’ve spilled some wine on the cushions or maybe gotten popcorn stuck in between the cushions. You can always clean your couch, but it still probably won’t look as good as when you first brought it home. Getting a couch cover is an easy hack that can make it look brand new. You can turn your grungy gray couch into that modern blue couch you’ve always wanted by just putting fabric over it.

If your family gathers for weeknight dinners at the dining table day after day, eventually, your furniture gets worn out. Your dining table could be covered in water stains or the chair seats might be faded, but that can be fixed with a nice touch-up. If you have wooden furniture, wood stains and glosses are your best friends. You can change a lighter color of wood to a darker shade and then use a gloss to make it look as good as new.

While you’re watching TV through your favorite streaming service, you might look at your television stand and realize it’s time for something different. You could easily give your TV stand a makeover by painting it a new color. Or, if you're feeling really crafty, you can go to your local hardware store and look for a wooden plank or a glass piece that you can place on top of the stand to upgrade its appearance.

While you’re organizing your kitchen, you might realize you’re in need of a whole new kitchen layout. If there are doors on the cabinets, one way to easily achieve a new-feeling space is to take them off and create an open cabinet concept. Now you can quickly grab any spices and other pantry staples you need while you’re cooking.

Over time, your dresser drawers may come to a point where they are difficult to open or close anymore. Or the worst-case scenario: they break down completely. When that happens, there is no need to despair, because you can repurpose that drawer. Grab some wood to make legs and cover it in fabric to create an ottoman for your living room, bedroom or anywhere else in the house. Drawers can also be used as upcycled planters in your garden.

Maybe the drawers aren’t an issue. Perhaps you’re just tired of the overall look of your dresser. You can turn your dresser into a multipurpose vanity for your bedroom or bathroom. Now you can keep everything you need to get ready in the morning together in one place.

Maybe while you were cleaning up the attic or garage and seeing what items you should get appraised, you came across an old trunk that belonged to your parents or grandparents. With a little elbow grease, this trunk can actually make a nice vintage centerpiece in your living room or be used as a coffee table.

A simple way to get your table looking brand new is to either give it a paint job or use a gloss to make it shine. But if you want to give it an extreme makeover, you can rework the legs. Depending on the type of table you own, you can replace the ordinary straight legs and give it legs at an angle for a modern look.

Tired of your old coffee table? Is it covered with unpleasant stains from your morning cup of joe? Don’t throw it away completely. You can paint it a different color or bring it outside and use it as a planter for your garden.

You may not believe there are other purposes for a stool other than sitting on it. But if you remove the cushion and add a few wooden pieces on top of the rungs, you can create a side table with shelving for books and other items.

While you’re doing some home maintenance, you might come across an old bench that you don’t really use anymore. This can be transformed into a great end table in your living room. You can place a lamp, a plant and other things on it to help make your space feel bigger and more inviting.

A headboard isn’t only a statement piece for your bed. You can attach it to a bench to give it a second life. Or you can place it along your wall in your bathroom and attach hooks to it to create a bathroom hanger for your towels and clothes.

Using wallpaper can be the decorating hack you need to revamp your room. But don’t just use it on your walls. You can put wallpaper on your vanity to give it some new creative patterns.

If your child has outgrown their crib, you can still find use for their crib mattress. Repurpose it by turning it into the base for a daybed. During the day, you can sit on it together while you’re reading a book or use it for a quick and cozy nap. Before trying to upcycle this item, however, you should consider deep-cleaning the mattress.

Give your bookcase a vintage-style makeover. Add some cabinet doors onto the shelves to make it look like a hutch. Your house may not look like one of the most stunning libraries in the world, but this makeover can make it more of a focal point in the room.

Have an old door and don’t know what to do with it? Turn it into a coffee table for your living room. All you need to do is attach legs to help it stand up. Use a vase as a centerpiece and add some cute coasters to protect it while you’re lounging around.

Tired of the way your kitchen looks and want to add something to make it pop? If you have old cabinets, you can use them to create a kitchen island. Now you’ll have more storage space to keep ingredients on hand to make delicious dishes using pantry staples.

Sometimes all a piece of outdated furniture needs is a new handle, knob, hinge or other accessories. For example, you can make your dresser look brand new by giving it a different style of handles on the drawers.

Shutters can replace ordinary doors on most of your furniture and give any piece a completely different look than before. Replace your cabinet and cupboard doors with shutters. You can even use shutters as a headboard to add a creative visual effect in your bedroom that will make it even more cozy for sleep.

You probably wouldn’t think of using ladders as a home organization hack. If you don’t have enough storage space in your closet, you can stick a wooden rod between two ladders to create a new free-standing clothes rack. Or it can turn a retro wooden ladder into a bookcase.

Have an old window frame that fell off your window or has been beaten up by the elements outside? Paint over the frame to cover any imperfection you don’t want. Then you can use black chalk paint to cover the panes and create a message board that you can hang up by the entryway of your home. Attach some hooks to hold your keys and other important things.

Don’t make your garbage can only hold dirty waste. Garbage cans can actually make great plant holders for your outdoor or indoor garden or be turned into a rain barrel.

You probably use your mirror every day to check your outfit, hair and makeup. But your mirror deserves to look pretty as well. You can decorate your mirror’s frames with fairy lights or light bulbs, or you can spray paint it a different color to create a more dynamic, decorative piece. If you’re looking for smaller projects around the house than upcycling old furniture, there are plenty of other household items you can repurpose.
