With the presidential election approaching, political engagement has increasing importance. In 2020, Black voters will account for about 12% of the national electorate. But, in some states, the Black population is more politically engaged than in others.

In a recent study, WalletHub determined the political engagement of Black populations in each state using six metrics: Black voter turnout (2016 presidential election), Black voter turnout (2018 midterm elections), Black voter registration (2016 presidential election), Black voter registration (2018 midterm elections), proportional representation of Black people in state legislature, and proportional representation of Black people in national party conventions. Montana was not included in the study because of data limitations.
