The Walking Dead may not be real, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be.
Well, it probably couldn’t. But in the off chance there’s an outbreak of some reanimating pathogen, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
In fact, preparation for a zombie apocalypse is a little like prepping for any other disaster, whether it’s a sudden weather event, terrorist attack or an epidemic that decimates the human race. The CDC even has a website dedicated to zombie prep, in case you’re interested.
What we’re getting at is that you don’t have to be a zombie prepper to get some mileage out of the gear featured in this slideshow. You don’t even necessarily have to be suffering through a disaster either: our picks can be lifesavers for day hikers, hunters and backpackers.
Which is just as well because you may be doing all of those things when the dead rise and start calling out for that high-protein snack between your ears. Head for the hills, is what they say.
We tried to cover the basics: water, fire, food, shelter, light, communication and first aid. While this is not a comprehensive survival kit, it’ll take care of you in many unexpected situations. Most of this kit is small and light enough to fit in your pack, and there are a few things in it—including a first aid kit and survival blanket—that should never leave your bag if you spend a lot of time outdoors.
Good luck out there.
